Web Technology And Bloom's Taxonomy

Kathy Schrock's interactive chart of Android apps that support the Revised Bloom's Taxonomy prompted me to think about how the digital tools I've had my students use fit into the Bloom's framework. A while back, Andrew Churches wrote a wonderful post relating digital usages to the Revised Bloom's Taxonomy: Bloom's Taxonomy Blooms Digitally.  His post provides verbs and digital tools that are associated with the new levels of Bloom's. The picture here is Churches summary. As I looked at Kathy Schrock's list of Android apps, and her list of Google tools, I saw that many tools overlap levels, depending on how they are used.

So far this year, my Oceanography class has tweeted, blogged, submitted their documents online, watched my lectures online, discussed articles online, and glogstered.

Glogster: Our first poster project of the year, on the history of ocean exploration, was done with Glogster. Later on in the year, a poster on hurricanes was required. The Glogster posters met requirements to a much greater degree than the paper posters did, and both assignments had the same students and similar rubrics.

TED Talks in Oceanography Class

I love using TED Talks in my classes. They are inspirational, authentic, and brilliant. We've been studying waves this week - water waves as well as sound waves - and I thought it would be interesting to think about how whale sounds travel through water. In previous years, teaching ecology, I had shown students sonographs of the voices of different birds and discussed with students how the bird voice relates to that bird's environment. I wanted this class to think about marine animals communication through water.
Pilot Whale Vocalizations
Peter Tyack, of Woods Hole, presented a TED Talk on ways whales use sound and song to communicate across the oceans, and how their voices and behaviors are affected by human oceanic activities.  After watching The intriguing sound of marine mammals, I had the students immediately write down their reactions and thoughts, after which we did a sharing of them. If students were having difficulty starting, or had stalled in their conversations, I prompted with questions, such as: "Why did Mr. Tyack use whales for his study?", "What do you think of the actual sounds the whales make? Why do you think they make that type of sound?", "What methods were used for this research?", "What additional actions could be taken for the whales?"

Classroom-Changing Technology in 21st Century

Digital Tools Changing Teaching and Learning
Ted Floyd wrote a post called 25 Things That Changed Birding—Recently enumerating changes in the 21st Century that affected how birding is done. This caused me to think about things that changed teaching for me. I've only been a teacher for ten years, which would all be in the 21st Century, but I have tried to meet my students future (college and business) needs by using digital tools as appropriate. I am not as ambitious as Mr. Floyd in identifying 25 things. Instead, I am going to think about a few things that have changed teaching and learning in my little classroom world.
  • Interactive White Board: At first my IWB was nothing more than glorified powerpoint, but as both the school's broadband access and online resources have increased, so has my "integrated" use of the IWB. I use it for everything from taking attendance to sharing and analyzing laboratory data. Students can easily contribute and present their research on the IWB. I don't use many pre-made IWB lessons, preferring to custom design my own.
  • Internet: My students seem to have access to virtually everything, and most days we access something online. TED Talks are inspiring presentations from some of the brightest people on the planet. Vimeo, Youtube, and other sites provide instant streaming video to support a lesson idea or answer a student question. Alternative viewpoints on current topics are available for students to debate. Internet savvy happens in my classroom.
  • Jing: With this tool I record my own lessons to post as either homework, instructions for a project, tutorials, or review. I have some difficulties with posting my screencasts, but I am improving all the time.
  • Blogging: I require my students to write blog posts, read others posts, comment on posts, and respond to comments on their posts. I believe this promotes writing for others, reflection, peer review, and thoughtful critique. All of their writing is directly related to their science curriculum, and thus adds to understanding of the subject material.
  • Netvibes: Where some people may use a webquest, I use a Netvibes tab. Netvibes organizes my readings, the resources I want to share with the students,
Use or Integration?

A twitter post one day read "introducing middle schoolers to StumbleUpon. Kids plugging in their interests." I asked, For what purpose? to which I received the response "to personalize and foster interests". Does this middle school math teacher really think that fostering personal interests through StumbleUpon is "integrating technology"?

The use of digital, electronic tools in the classroom has come to be know as "technology integration" in education. Simply using it does not, however, mean it was integrated.
What does it mean to "integrate" technology into your classroom? My understanding is that technology integration is to incorporate technological tools into a unified learning program. It is using available resources in ways that add to the teaching and understanding of the topic. Appropriate technology in one classroom may be different from another classroom. The best technology for learning how to write in cursive is the pencil. The best technology for learning accuracy in mass measurements might be a triple-beam balance.

In spite of my love for all things technology, my students only use what works for the content. Just "because its there" is not good enough for my classroom. It must demonstrate to me to give my students a competitive advantage in the future, and to be applicable to the curriculum.

How Is Your Response Time?

To contact us Click HERE

"It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change." - Charles Darwin

So have you noticed things changing? How have you responded?

These questions come to my mind everyday, in everyday living and dealing with people.

But it mostly comes up in my work. Nothing moves slower than a bureaucracy, and schools are certainly bureaucratic dinosaurs. Innovation is scoffed at, frowned upon, and had better work the first time you try it or don't try it again. (OK, that was both cynicism and sarcasm.)

21st Century List of Charts of Elements

The Periodic Table of Elements is the chemists main toolbox.  About three years ago I posted a bakers dozen of online Periodic Tables of Elements. As is the way with online resources and links, things have changed. This post refreshes the list, brings the links current, adds new resources, and drops bad links. There are numerous tables online that can be used by the teacher and the student for learning about the elements of the earth, and now we have them in podcasts, QR codes, and illustrated. Here is a dozen or so fun and useful favorites; enjoy:
  • Dynamic Interactive Table of Elements. A multi-layered interactive table with tabs that provide a wealth of information about properties, orbitals, isotopes, and just about anything else the student would need.
  • Chemistry in its Element Podcasts. A leading scientist or author tells the story behind each element.
  • Printable Periodic Tables. If you want to print out a copy of a table for your students, this is the place to go. There are illustrated versions and clean versions to choose from among the huge list ScienceGeek.net provides. There is even a QR Coded version.
  • Periodic Table of Videos. A whole set of videos by the University of Nottingham demonstrating properties of the elements and describing them. Quite a lot of fun.
  • The Sterling Museum of Mining has an interesting display of useful substances related to the elements.
  • Interactive Periodic Table Game. A module in the form of a game that can help the student with understanding trends and patterns in the periodic table. It also includes a link to a printable version of the table.
  • Los Alamos Lab Periodic Table of Elements. Great site for students. Colorful with interesting information about history, uses, and properties of elements.
  • These tables are also great for the elementary or high school student:
    • WebElements Periodic Table gives you basic element information plus isolation equations.
    • Chemical Elements is good for middle school and provides Bohr diagrams.
    • Jefferson Labs Table of Elements. Easy to use, click on an element and you are brought to a whole page of interesting and useful information on that element.
  • ChemiCool Periodic Table. Detailed information on history of discovery and more. plus videos and links.
  • Wooden Periodic Table Table. An actual table shaped like the periodic table of elements and containing samples of the elements. Very cool.
  • The Photographic Periodic Table of Elements. Another site from the maker of the wooden periodic table table, this site contains pictures, stories, text, data, detailed technical data about every element, great pictures, information about radioactive decay chains, and more.
Cybraryman.com also has a list of links to charts of elements as well as links to discussions of the elements.
And then are the charts of non-chemistry elements that take the form of the periodic table of chemical elements:
    • The Periodic Table of Comic Books. Fun links to comic book pages involving chemical elements.
    • The Chemogenesis Database of Periodic Tables, shared by Twitter friend Ben Wildeboer, is a pile of non-chemistry periodic tables organizing beer, baseball players, cupcakes, text messaging, and typefaces.
    • Twitter friend @BlessedBees shared the Periodic Table of Visualizations.
Now I am thinking about all the projects a teacher could assign to organize information (history, art, math) in an organized chart of elements.

When the grill is hot, brush a little withthe oil and place the steak on it, and add salt and pepper on top and leave it there for about five to seven minutes, then change the page and repeat the same process again. Once you are done with both sides, remove the steak from the grill and now it is ready to serve. An important tip is to not cut the steak once, but let it stand for about five minutes, out so that the juices do not run from it. For dessert you can serve your guests with fried bananas with ice cream barsthey would just love.

    Web Technology And Bloom's Taxonomy

    To contact us Click HERE

     Remembering -- Understanding -- Applying -- Analysing -- Evaluating -- Creating
Keeping track of the many online tools and apps available is impossible as they continually change. You might find how I've used these tools with students helpful when designing your lessons. Each year I direct my students to use a variety of digital tools, some online and some downloads. So far this year, my Oceanography class has tweeted, blogged, submitted their documents online, watched my lectures online, discussed articles online, and glogstered.

Twitter: The few students willing to tweet think of it as a way to do status updates. I tried to show them its other possibilities by tweeting links to their blogs, searching hashtags,
Blogging: I've posted on this before, and will again. Links to previous posts on students blogging:
    • Students Blog
    • What Did You Learn In School Today?
    • Moon Journals
    • and the student blog itself is here.
Glogster: Our first poster project of the year, on the history of ocean exploration, was done with Glogster. Later on in the year, a poster on hurricanes was required. The Glogster posters met requirements to a much greater degree than the paper posters did, and both assignments had the same students and similar rubrics.

Schoolloop: Our school uses Schoollop for posting assignments, notices, and grades. I have been requiring students to submit their papers and written homework directly into schoolloop. I have also been posting my lectures here. That's a few for now. I will post more later.

    How Destructive Is That Emotion?

    Ten Minute Lesson

A friend told me about this anti-bullying lesson that another teacher had done. I thought it was brilliant and so decided to do it myself with one especially troublesome class. Here’s how the lesson proceeded:

I gave each student a clean crisp sheet of paper. I instructed the class to crumple up the piece of paper, get angry with it, throw it on the floor, and stomp on it, rub it into the floor. Then I told the students to pick up their piece of paper, return to their seat, and flatten it out on top of their desks. “Try to make it as flat and neat as you can and then apologize to the paper for being so mean.”

When all the students had done their best to iron out the paper, I picked up one and held it up so the entire class could see it and said:

“Picture this piece of paper as the heart of another person. If you had done all those things to him or her, made him or her feel less than perfect -- through your words or actions -- these are the scars you would leave on that person. He or she would never be the same, no matter how many times you say you are sorry, no matter how many times you try to smooth things out..."

The students faces told the story of the impact this visual makes.

October is National Anti-Bullying Awareness month. While we all have flaws, no one has the right to make another person feel less worthwhile through humiliation, bullying, or any other action.  I closed the lesson with:

You can make a difference. Don’t be the one to scar another human being. Not only that, don’t allow others around you to be that person. Every day, strive to lead a life where others are valued."
“When we are caught up in a destructive emotion, we lose one of our greatest assets: Our independence.”  ~Dalai Lama
Most adults can handle random insults, but our children need to learn that "a happy society is created by people themselves... by taking action." ~Dalai Lama

This month, make a commitment. Check out Stomp Out Bullying, the National Child Traumatic Stress Network,  and Hey Ugly for ideas. Finally, I would like to send kudos to a TV anchor responded to a viewer who complained about her obesity on air.  It would be nice to hear of more examples.

The 33 21st Century Skills Every Teacher Should Have

Today I introduced blogging to my oceanography classes. My school has two computer labs available for the entire high school Our science department, needing to use the vernier probes for some of the labs, has purchased two laptop carts, each with 12 laptops in them. School computers will only allow access if they are within reach of a wifi hub; my classroom has wifi internet access. I reserved both of the laptop carts for the day so that each student could get a Wordpress.com login account, and I could show them how the Wordpress site worked.

Problem #1: First thing in the morning I went to collect the two carts, each of  which is housed in the newer science classrooms.  One was not there and the other one was missing a laptop. I searched every other science classroom, and the library, looking for the missing cart but did not find it. I have 11 laptops. Flex: Students share and take turns signing on. While one is learning the wordpress blog protocols the other can be drafting his or her post on writing paper.

Problem #2: Knowing that the login tends to take longer in my room, I instruct the students to begin logging in while I explain the assignment. The blog assignment is an analysis of learning attained on a field trip the previous day. We get through a detailed explanation of all the aspects that could be blogged. Only a few laptops have booted up to the login screen. Flex:  I have the wordpress site projected on the wall and begin explaining how to sign up, having the students hand write the website url and sign up instructions. By the end of the period, Only two (2) computers have made it to the Wordpress.com login page. I check the library schedule and find it is open for my next class; I sign up.

Problem #3: Students sign up for and log into the wordpress site. All blog posts are to go on the PRHS science blog, so they also accept invitations to the site. When students click the "New Post" link, one-third get stuck in spinning limbo. Flex: Students are directed to draft their work on Word, for later posting. I sign up for library for Tuesday (next school day).

So THIS was a frustrating day. What should have been accomplished in less than one period, remains for the next class day. Good thing I'm flexible and can adjust, but if schools are to embrace the 21st Century skills, and I believe blogging is an important skill, then schools will need to establish strategies for maintaining highly functioning systems.

“The fact of the matter is, if you can start up a local blog about the independent hip-hop scene in Seattle or the financial side of the restaurant business or the intersection of immigration and entrepreneurship, you’ve got a far better shot at becoming a leader in your field.” (Rand Fishkin)

Instructions For Students Writing Blog Posts In Oceanography ClassHopefully, this post will clarify questions students are having about what is “required” for a blog post. It is first important to understand the driving question behind the assigned topic. Know whether the topic is meant to be reflective or analytical. Verify the assigned length, and format requirements (first person or third person; headings required; formal 5-paragraph or not; etc.)Basic Rubric For Blog PostWriting can begin only after the assignment is understood and research completed. Always, ALWAYS keep track of sources. Now write:
    1. Make sure the post is going to the correct blog; many people have multiple blogs. When Ms. Goodrich assigns a blog post for oceanography class, make sure it appears on Ms. Goodrich’s Science Class Blog.
    2. The title should state the point being made in the assignment and NOT be the name of the assignment. Be clever! Consider how a news journalist would title the essay or article. Your post needs to stand out from all the others! Check out this post by Copyblogger: How To Write Headlines That Work
    3. Subtitles give clarity to the topic, especially if the cleverly written title could be interpreted more than one way.
    4. Blogs are visual. Include pictures – properly credited – and videos. Don’t forget that pictures require titling as well.
    5. The writing should make the reader want to find out more about the topic. Give the reader a place to go with links embedded in the text – at least three.
    6. Leave the reader with a provocative thought at the end of your post. Don’t let your readers go without making them think about your topic. You want them to believe that you are the expert on whatever it was you wrote about.
    7. We live in a world of search engines. Make sure your post gets found by categorizing your post “Oceanography” and labeling the post with key words. Use as many tags as apply. It’s all good.
Final requirement:Do not bore. You don’t want to be bored, so write to excite.50 Thoughtful, Funny, and Polemic Quotes About Blogging

Summary of Gigantical Smelly Rafflesia Flower

    To contact us Click HERE
What do you think of when you think of flowers? Does rotten flesh come to mind? Didn't think so! Now it will.

Have you ever heard of the Rafflesia flower? It's the worlds largest flower. It can weigh up to 15lbs and become as wide as 3 feet. The buds are the size of basketballs. Ginormous!!!!!

Do you think of a radiently beautiful smell when we say flower? Well, think again! The Rafflesia is said to smell like ROTTEN FLESH!!! EEWWIIEE! It's hard to believe that it may be related to the beautiful poinsettia flower! That's what this article is actually about. Scientists are trying to find a family for the Rafflesia, and scientists have found that the vile plant is in the same family as the pointsettia, and also the castor beans.

Rafflesias have evolved into parasites. The do not have roots or leaves and they live off of another plant that is part of the grapevine fam. Dude, that's CRAZY WEIRD!!!! LOL!!!!!
